Visitors often refer to Northern Wisconsin as "God's Country". People go there for the natural beauty of it's many lakes, parks and campgrounds. Most fail to see and understand the life of the local residents. God's Country has problems.
For local residents, going to the Fair is an event that evokes a feeling of joy and expectation in young and old alike. People are looking for a brief respite from the daily grind and drudgery of life. However, even in the place they have come to enjoy themselves, there is a sense of emptiness. There is a disconnection and ambiguity expressed by their physical presence or by their expression. There is something that is not quite right.
